For Immediate Release – August 19, 2019
Yanah G. Cook, dedicated public servant and longtime South Pierce County resident, seeks to bring a new perspective to the Pierce County Council. PIERCE COUNTY, WA – Yanah Cook announced today that she is running for Pierce County Council District No 3. Cook has lived and volunteered in Pierce County for nearly 27 years. She is a small business owner, working in both Pierce and Thurston Counties and currently serves as the vice chair of the Small Business Caucus.
Cook has a long history of public service, including working nearly two decades for the Washington State Department of Transportation. As an employee and volunteer, she was co-coordinator of fundraising for the Combined Fund Drive and the Well Fed, Well Read program. Cook is a strong advocate for the people of Pierce County working on numerous campaigns that support school and fire levies and bonds and has volunteered all over the district registering and educating voters. In 2016, Cook was elected as a precinct committee officer (PCO), a position she still holds today. For the past three years, she has represented the 2nd Legislative District as their State Committee member and in early 2019 her passion for the district prompted her to become the first ever volunteer lobbyist for the 2nd Legislative District.
A longtime supporter of our first responders, Cook began attending Fire District Commission meetings where she heard concerns over the district’s lack of safety apparel and fire equipment. This, coupled with feedback about low morale among our firefighters, prompted her to run for Fire Commissioner in 2017. During that campaign, she traveled all 142 square miles with the Fire Chief visiting the district’s eight substations and learning firsthand about the safety needs of Fire District 17. Although another candidate prevailed in that campaign, these efforts deepened Cook’s connection and commitment to the district. The stories she heard meeting with community leaders, riding along with first responders and knocking on the doors of residents have compelled her to continue her work to serve the people of South Pierce County.
“We need to challenge the status quo. The people of Pierce County Council District 3 deserve transparent leadership, someone who takes the time to listen to their concerns, takes action and reports back” Cook said. “ We need to put a Cook on the council, and change the recipe.”
Cook’s campaign has just begun and has garnered early support from concerned citizens and community leaders, including Marilyn Rasmussen, former State Legislator, Dr. Dave Little, 2nd LD Chair, John Linboe, Candidate- Fire District 17 #1, Former County Council Member Tim Farrell and Carrie Little, and long time farmer “Little Eorthe Farm”, Orting WA.
